Wednesday Weigh In...Starting up...AGAIN!

(Sorry if this is a bit offensive, but boy don't we all hate the scale?!)

All this beautiful summer weather is making me feel FAT!   For those of you that follow my blog, you know that I lost about 30 lbs at the end of 2011.  Well...I have gained back almost 20 of it!  I am so mad at myself. How did this happen?  I have no self control when it comes to food.  The other culprit...Mountain Dew.  For some reason, this has been my drug of choice when dealing with stress.  I need to make a lifestyle change.

So here I am starting again.  I need to do something different, so I am starting the C25K.  This is a nine week running program that is designed to get anyone off the couch and running.  I used to be athletic.  I know I can do this.  I picked this program because it starts out with little spurts of running.  I don't think that it will be too overwhelming.  In addition to this program, I am going to replace my 3 sodas a day (yes, it really is that bad!) with green tea.  I will allow myself 1 diet soda a day, but I know they are bad for you also!  I am hoping to share with you my progress each week.  Please, Keep me accountable!

A Family Favorite: Broccoli Cheese Soup

Over at Lynn's Kitchen Adventures, we are sharing our favorite soup recipes.  This is one of my hubby's favorites.  It is so easy to make and is super tasty.  Pair it with a salad or sandwich and you have a delicious meal!  We paired ours with Grilled Ham & Cheese Sandwiches.  My kiddos gobbled it up!

Here is whatcha need:
  • 6 T. Butter
  • 5 T. Flour
  • 1 med. onion, chopped
  • 3 cups of water
  • 5 chicken bouillon cubes
  • 2 (10 oz) pkgs. chopped broccoli
  • 5 cups of milk
  • 2 lbs. of Velveeta Cheese
Melt butter.  Saute' onions.  Stir in flour. Add water, bouillon cubes, broccoli, milk.  Bring to a boil; simmer.  Remove from heat and add Velveeta cheese. Cut in small portions.  Makes 3 quarts.

***Note: This recipe was given to me from a lady at church. I can't take credit for this deliciousness.

Whatcha Eatin'? Monday, March 12th

We are coming off of a very busy weekend.  Saturday night we invited the hubby's family over for dinner. Then, we spent Sunday night with my family celebrating March & April birthdays.  Little Bro has an April birthday, so he was excited to get some new toys to play with.

In the midst of all this craziness, we had to get used to the time change.  I really don't understand why it is still necessary to "spring foward" and "fall back".  It just messes up my kiddos' schedule and takes about a week to get used to.   I thought this morning the boys would sleep in till at least 9:00, which would be the old 8:00, but nope...they were up bright and early at 8:00.  Okay, so this isn't early, but I was wide awake until midnight last night and Baby Sis woke up twice because of her teething and first cold.  I was hoping to get some things accomplished before the kiddos were up this morning, but that didn't happen!  My "To Do" list just keeps getting longer and longer.  I feel like I need to hire a babysitter for an entire day so I can finally get some things accomplished.  Seriously...how do you working mothers do it?

Well, at least I managed to plan our menu for this week:

Sunday:  Dinner with Family, I brought a Taco Dip w/chips

Monday:  Brown Sugar Chicken, Baby Red Potatoes, Green Beans

Tuesday:  Cheeseburger Soup, French Bread  ***Family Favorite***

Wednesday: Chicken Tortellini Alfredo, Salad, Breadsticks

Thursday: Meatloaf, Party Potatoes (I'll share recipes on Friday), Corn, Dinner Rolls

Friday:  Leftovers or Take out

Saturday:  Make Your Own Pizzas, Veggies & Dip

Potty Training Stinks...Literally

***WARNING:  This post contains graphic information about POOP.  Read at your own risk.***
Little Bro will be turning 3 in a little over a month and he is still not potty trained.  I know, I know...he should have been potty trained by now.  However, with having a baby last summer,  I just kept putting it off.  About a week ago, I finally decided that it was time and I picked a date to start.  Thursday, March 8th to be exact.  Now, we are in potty training mode.

I had a plan.  With Big Brother, I had done the "Naked Method" which seemed to work, so I thought I'd try it again.  The "Naked Method" consists of getting rid of diapers cold turkey.  You basically pump your child full of juice or water and let them run around the house buck naked for a day or two.  YES, you will have accidents, BUT this should teach them to recognize the feeling of having to go to the bathroom.  It is still important to take your child to sit on the toilet frequently to avoid some of these accidents, so set the timer and take him/her to sit on the potty every 30 minutes.  Of course, reward him/her each time they make it to the potty.  Then, after a couple of days you stick them in underwear and don't look back.  Yes, you will still have accidents, but with each passing day you will see fewer and fewer.

Thursday morning we were all set. I had the rewards: M&M's for Pee-Pee,  McDonald's toy for Poo-Poo.  (I had gotten a bag full of them from my neighbor's girlfriend.  Wasn't that nice?)  I had all my carpet cleaner, special undies, and my pull-ups (for night time).  Now, I just needed to get Little Bro on board.

The first couple of times he was so excited to get up on the potty and earn his M&M's.  I actually put him on backwards so that he wouldn't have a mess all over the place.  This is a trick I learned from my mother who potty trained SEVEN boys!  I believe she would be considered an expert.   After about five times on the potty, Little Bro started getting bored with it.  He also didn't like getting pulled away from playing to go potty.  Therefore, I started waiting a little bit longer and our accidents started to increase.

First, pee on the floor, then pee on the rug, then pee on the couch...then the worst possible...poop.   I had just finished taking him to the potty, so I thought he was safe. I started cleaning up after lunch while him and Big bro played in the living room.  Thank goodness Baby Sis was napping!  He comes running in to the kitchen with poo on his hands saying "Ewww Mommy, ewww Mommy!"  Not only did he have poop on his hands, on his legs, on my rug, but as I was walking to assess the damage...I stepped in some!  Yuck!  Into the shower it was.   Thankfully, we have hardwood floors!  Only a little of it got on the rug, and I was able to get it out immediately.  After that incident, I decided it was time to put the undies on! The afternoon was much better, only a couple of accidents.  Day two...not too bad.  Maybe five accidents.  Can't wait to see what Day 3 brings!

Wish me luck!  Feel free to share your potty training tips and tricks!

Infants’ Advil® to the Rescue: My Honest Review

A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon a wonderful website called Smiley360 that offers opportunities to obtain coupons for products or even actual products to review.  As a money saving momma, I decided that I'd give it a try.  Immediately, I accepted a mission to "try out" Infants’ Advil®.  A couple of weeks later, a full size bottle of Infants’ Advil® arrived at my doorstep.

I was excited, but not exactly sure how quickly I would be able to sample it.  I really try to avoid any type of medications or pain relievers for my babies and try to do as much naturally as possible.  However, when my sweet little baby girl was incredibly irritable and in a lot of pain from the FOUR teeth that were trying to pop thru her gums, I decided to rely on some Infants’ Advil®  .  Baby Sis is nine months old so I knew that it was safe for her to try it.  My pediatrician had given me a dosage chart at our last visit, so I was able to use her weight and know exactly what would be safe to give her.  The dropper included with the Infants’ Advil® was easy to read and use also.  The only thing that I was a bit surprised at was Baby Sis's reaction.  I thought that she would love the sweet grape taste, but she fought me. I managed to get most of it in her mouth.  Before long, my sweet little angel was in a deep painless sleep in my arms.  I would say that Infants’ Advil® did the trick!

Want to try it out?  You can obtain a $1 off coupon at the Children’s Advil® website.

***These are my honest opinions.  I was not compensated by Advil for this post.  However, I did receive a Free bottle of Infants' Advil.

Whatcha Eatin'?: Monday, March 5th Edition

Some of you may have noticed that we have cheeseburgers on the grill at least once a week around here.  This is usually my night off from cooking and my hubby does all the work.  We have had such a mild winter that it hasn't really changed our little tradition.  However, it was really funny when it started snowing like crazy last night while my hunky hubby was grilling wearing his flip flops.  I wish you could see the enormous snowflakes in the picture.

We ended up getting an inch of snow that will probably melt by this afternoon.  This week's menu is kind of boring, but here it is:

Sunday: Last night we had Cheeseburgers, French Fries, Baked Beans, Cottage Cheese

Monday:  Shepherd's Pie, Salad, Rolls

Tuesday:   Creamy Italian Chicken, Noodles, Green Beans

Wednesday:  Tacos, Mixed Fruit

Thursday: Spaghetti Pie, Corn, Garlic Bread

Friday:  Frozen Pizza

Saturday:  Inviting Family over for Dinner...Not sure of menu yet!

What are you eatin' this week?  Link up with me at Organizing Junkie's Menu Plan Monday!  Have a wonderful week!

29 Organizational Challenge: Basement...MISSION COMPLETED!

Wow!  Has it already been 29 days?  There were times when I wasn't quite sure that I would actually complete this monstrous task, but my basement is finally organized! Let me show you my before and after pictures...

This is where I started with our main room in the basement:

Over the past month I went through each and every tote and purged anything that was not necessary to keep.  I was able to reorganize everything to make my basement so much nicer!  Here are the results:

Remember?  I had that lovely closet in my basement also.

1. What space did you decide to organize and why? Although I could have picked any room in my house, I decided that my basement was needing the most attention. My basement doubles as a playroom for my young children (ages 4 1/2, 2 1/2, and 9 month old) and a storage space for the entire family. It also has a small closet which I like to use as my "home office" for my home business.  Unfortunately, my storage was overtaking the children's area and it was making it a dangerous spot to play. Also, I had a lot of open boxes and containers full of "stuff" that they were continually getting into and making a bigger mess.

2.  What steps did you take to ensure you completed the space within the 29 day timeline?  My original plan was to spend an hour each night in my basement.  However, with a teething baby, I was in desperate need for sleep, so whenever I could find time I worked on it.  One thing that worked for me was setting the timer.  When I put the baby down, I would set the timer for 30 minutes and and take the boys downstairs to play while I worked.  Really, I am a bit shocked that I got 95% of it completed in time.  The only thing left to do is actually my husband's responsibility.  He has his hunting and winter work clothes to put away.  He doesn't like me touching his precious hunting stuff.

3.  What was the hardest part of the challenge for you and how did you overcome it?  My hardest part in this challenge was letting go of what I thought was "sentimental"  items.  I had seven totes and a huge chest full of "stuff" from my life before kids.  I knew that someday when I would pass my children would just throw half of it away so I wanted to condense it down to half.  It was very hard to let some things go, but I asked myself these questions:  Will my children want to deal with this when I am gone?  Do I want my children to see this? (this is referring to my college days and old love notes not from my hubby).  Will I even know that it is here a year from now?  By doing this, I was eventually able to part with three entire totes of stuff and I emptied the antique chest and placed my other antiques in there.  This way I was able to get rid of yet another tote!

(I got rid of 95% of this stuff!)

4. What did you do with the “stuff” you were able to purge out of your newly organized space?  I trashed a lot of the stuff.  In fact, I put three large boxes full and six bags in the dumpster.  I got rid of an old computer which was an awesome feeling.  I was able to donate 3 garbage bag fulls to Good Will.  The remaining items were either placed in my garage sale pile, Craiglist/Ebay bile, or placed in boxes to pass on to someone else.  My parents are nice enough to let me store the garage sale boxes in their cabin until the garage sale in April.  Then, anything that is left over will be donated!  My husband will not let me bring any of it back in the house!

(this was just the beginning of my pile)

5.  Tell me one of your proudest moments during this challenge?  I think my proudest moment was when my husband finally let me get rid of his 13 inch TV and his Playstation 2.   He has been holding on to his 13 inch since he got it when he was 13 years old!  I am finally getting him on board with the purging in this house.  Also, it was absolutely wonderful to see my little boys' faces light up when they saw their new play area.

6.  Explain any organizing “tools” you used to help you create additional space and to establish some limits and boundaries?  One of my goals was a separate storage and toy space.  Luckily, I found a leftover remnant from when we laid carpet last winter and I was able to find space to lay it down.  Now, the toy area is on the carpet and the storage is on the cement.

In the toy area, I organized all the farm, truck and tractor toys on the smaller carpet and then the kitchen area on the larger carpet.   My boys helped me go through the toys and were able to throw away any tractor or truck with missing tires.  That was a huge help!  We then found an empty tub to house all the truck or tractors that they were keeping.

I reorganized the totes that I was keeping in the storage area by keeping the totes that I would actually get into throughout the year in an easily accessible place.  Anything that wouldn't be touched, could be put towards the back or bottom.  I then labeled every tote/box so I would know what it contained.

Labeling was also a great tool for my closet.  In fact, I went a little crazy with the labels.

7.  What is ONE piece of advice you’d give to someone else to encourage them on their organizational journey?  "Rome wasn't built in a day."  You won't get organized over night, but start small and keep working at it!  Do a little each night and before you know it, you'll be done!

Thank you Laura for doing this challenge! It is exactly what I needed to get my butt in gear!
